Fail.

Yes the dress I have been slowly working on for weeks and hoping to be that summer dress that you just want to wear everyday is a fail!

Butterick B5181 had such high hopes, but there is rather to much fabric and not that well fitting. Sadly I am not the type to just keep on trying, sometimes when you put a garment on you just know, no matter how many adjustments this dress is not destine to be worn. It is a bit of a tent and I like flowing but not maternity like.

I could have tried harder and I think I need to remeasure my bust and waist but ultimately MrPB wasn't loving it much either and he simple said "It's  a bit Margo" which lover of BBC TV series The Good Life will know what he means.

It can be really frustrating when your make is not wearable particularly when you are so time short like myself. I have to constantly remind myself that it's the enjoyment of the task too, which is true when I'm sat at my sewing table but not when my mind is busy trying to plan all those projects.

As for new projects, yes there is one but I'll let you know a little more soon.

  1. This dress is very pretty though, even if you don't like how it looks on you. And you got some more practice, right?

  2. I agree with A.J.A.: the dress itself is lovely, even if it does not flatter you as you had hoped. I once hand-sewed a dress with expensive linen that fit me perfectly but looked awful. I ended up ripping it apart and using the scraps to make strips for doing rag curls...

  3. Oh Charlotte, I am so sorry.. The dress is beautiful in the photo.. But, I understand, sometimes, it doesn't feel/look the way we want it to.. The fabric is gorgeous [Is it possible to use the bottom for a skirt?
Look forward to seeing your next project.. Happy sewing.

  4. After all your work, it must be so frustrating! The fabric is lovely, maybe you could make a top out of the skirt portion? It'd be a shame to lose that lovely border print!

  5. I hate when that happens, and I find gathers really hit or miss, even though I love them. That said, I still think the dress looks beautiful! If you're uncomfortable in it maybe take off a chunk of length of the skirt fabric? I think a shorter version with a poofy gathered skirt together with that neckline would be stunning!

    1. Yes I may have a go a shorter version. Once my heart is not in it I have to shelve it for a while and hope the love comes back. I'm not great on alterations. Thanks though. x

  6. That's a bummer about the dress, projects like that are so annoying! The fabric is so nice, so I encourage you to try and salvage it. Alterations are easier than they look, if you want some help, please feel free to ask me, I alter all my friends clothes :)

  7. Hi Charlotte - I’ve awarded you the ‘Super Sweet Award’ – hope this is ok – you can find out all about it in the 6 August post on my blog.

  8. What a pity, it's such a lovely print! I have made myself a dress in a similar style and something I found that really helped it to look less "maternity" (and after 4 children I have quite the belly to show for it!) was instead of gathering around the waistband I made a dart on each side of the waist, say between the centre and the hip on each side. This totally changed the look of the dress and makes it sit flat against my stomach, the gathers just added extra bulk.
